General Motors (GM) owns GMC and is based in the United States. GM headquarters are in downtown Detroit in the Renaissance Center at the heart of where America’s automotive industry was born. Known primarily for hard-working trucks and luxurious and powerful SUVs in Macon and Byron, GMC is just one brand made by GM, which also owns Chevy, Buick, and Cadillac. Where is GMC made? Multiple factories are producing GMC vehicles and parts throughout the U.S. and Canada. Learn more about them with Five Star Chevrolet, then see the fruits of their labor in our new GMC inventory.
GMCs are made in these North American factories before they’re delivered for driving in Robins Air Force Base and beyond:
What’s next for the GMC production line? The revamped all-electric Hummer started production in a GM facility near Detroit in Hamtramck, Michigan. The facility underwent over $2 billion in upgrades to make the switch to electric vehicle production. Previously, when the military-design Humvee first hit the commercial market in 1985 they were produced by GM in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Some of the world’s first trucks were developed by the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, founded by Max Grabowsky. In 1909 Grabowsky’s company was purchased to create General Motors Truck Company (later renamed GMC). In 1912 they released the first mass-produced truck, which sold over 22,000 models. During World War II they were an important U.S. military supplier, making over 600,000 trucks for the military.
